The president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, John Fahey, has suggested schools should play a role in educating young people about the potential harm caused by steroids and sports supplements. NSW schools stand to lose $5 billion in funding if the Coalition win the federal election and scrap reforms agreed to after the Gonski review, according to the NSW Teachers Federation. Minister for School Education Peter Garrett has moved to dispel Opposition claims that the federal government intends to reduce school funding. Mr Garrett explained that National Partnership program funding will be rolled into the National Plan for School Improvement, thereby making the spending recurrent. The Australian Education Union has awarded this year's Arthur Hamilton Award to Sunning Hill School's Aboriginal Education Team. The award, which acknowledges outstanding contributions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education, was presented in recognition of the "Yarning with Aunties" program, which exposes young females remanded in custody to elders who can connect them with their culture and heritage.
