New No Scaredy Cats course builds resilience thinking
A new parenting course No Scaredy Cats equips children with resilience thinking skills and aims to help parents help their kids’ mental strength. The first No Scaredy Cats programme kicks off in Hobart, at The Friends School, on Saturday 1st June 2019.
   Michael Hawton, teacher, psychologist and author of two parenting books has seen first-­hand, a growing number of children who are ill equipped to handle life’s difficulties, including those difficulties involving other children’s meanness. Read more

Aussie High School students win at at International Science and Engineering Fair
Australian high school students Lucy Lake, Mitchell Torok, Ivy Brain, Macinley Butson and Callum Predavec have received multiple prizes at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona alongside over 1800 high school students from 75 countries.
   All students were finalists at the national 2019 BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Awards, a partnership between the BHP Foundation, CSIRO and the Australian Science Teachers Association. Read more

HALT top teachers go there
The two-day Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) Summit organised by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) 24-25 May in Darwin showcased some of the nation’s most esteemed educators. This year’s theme was ‘expanding our impact’.

Headaches after a knock under the genetic microscope
The world’s first study on whether genetic variations are involved in the post-traumatic headache experienced by some people following concussion is underway at QUT, funded by a $250,000 US Department of Defence grant.
   The study at the Genomics Research Centre at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) is headed by Executive Director and leader in migraine genetics research, Prof Lyn Griffiths.
   Neurologists and sporting clubs’ concussion doctors have been enlisted to help recruit participants. Read more

Trinity Grammar School is world athletics champion
The Aussies have proven themselves to be a bit too good again with Sydney’s Trinity Grammar School crowned the International Schools Federation (ISF) World Schools Athletics Champion 2019, ahead of Spain in second place, and Chinese Taipei who finished third, in the two-day international championships which were held in Split, Croatia on 15 and 16 May 2019.
   Trinity secured its spot in the World Championships having won the Intermediate Boys Division at the National Schools Knockout in Adelaide in 2018. Read more

Global education agents visit Adelaide
More than 80 influential international education agents visited Adelaide to participate in a major showcase of South Australia’s word class education.
   The StudyAdelaide ‘mega-famil’ aims to expose Adelaide’s education providers and the quality lifestyle that international students enjoy here, to agents who can influence parents and students choosing international study destinations and institutions.
  The agents will return home as advocates for South Australia, helping to further grow the State’s international students. This is the biggest showcase StudyAdelaide had undertaken. Read more

International students dissatisfied with accommodation
International students are only partially satisfied with their Australian accommodation offering, with the majority (60.4%) choosing to live in private rentals.
   The Aussie Study Experience report polled close to 700 international students in Australia. With students giving a mediocre 57 out of 100 as their accommodation satisfaction rating, the results demonstrate that there’s an opportunity for specialist student accommodation providers to win more market share. Australia’s international education accommodation industry added 10,850 new beds between 2018 and 2019 alone.
