Data-driven school insights for principals
Principals from across Australia will now have access to rigorous, data-driven insights to supplement their professional intuition and experience when making decisions about their school’s workforce with the launch of a new online platform by PeopleBench.
   PeopleBench Chief Education Officer Paul Easton says the new platform will enable principals to privately examine their schools and benchmark their workforce in context with other schools across the country. Read more

Schools critical for mental health identification and support
Schools are the most critical and untapped sites for identification and support of school aged students with mental health concerns, says special education consultant Tim Connell.
   In his experience spanning more than two decades in a variety of special education settings, Connell has seen many approaches to supporting mental health concerns in the classroom and broader school community but emphasises the importance of fluent information sharing in creating effective school support.

The Economist’s Open Future initiative's second annual essay competition open
The Economist newspaper invites young writers to enter its second annual Open Future essay competition. The essay will address what is needed to tackle climate change from an economic and political perspective.
   Open Future is an editorial initiative to remake the case for the newspaper’s founding principles of political, economic and social freedoms at a time when these values are under assault.

Education staff applications invited for 5k Scholarship Awards
Applications are now open for the 2019 NGS Super Scholarship Awards for the chance to win one of six $5000 scholarships.
   The scholarships are designed to fund education workers to take on a professional development course, project or an initiative of their choice.
   Applications are open until Monday, 2 September 2019, with all winners to be announced just before World Teacher’s Day on 3 October 2019.

Tonnes of oral care waste diverted from landfill by over 1000 schools nationwide
Australian school students are making war on waste by recycling all their used toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss containers through a nationwide competition diverting hundreds and thousands of oral care items from landfill.
   The Colgate Community Garden Challenge is underway with more than 1000 schools competing to win one of five recycled community garden sets and monthly prize draws of 60 upcycled pencil cases. Read more
