Teachers Need Time and Support

Teaching has intensified, teachers are asked to take on more compliance and more work and there’s not enough time in the day for teachers to do everything they’re asked to, this means that many feel overworked and underappreciated.
   A National Teacher Workforce Action Plan has been proposed by education ministers to address the teacher shortage with a focus on recruiting new teachers. Read more

Early Vocab Skills Indicate School Success

Children who enter preschool with good vocabulary and attention skills do better in class when they commence.
   The findings, from research based on 900 four-year-olds from eight US states show how a child’s ability to engage with teachers and peers is affected by the range of words they know. Young children are also more likely to get involved with classroom tasks if they have learned how to suppress inappropriate behaviour. Read more

The Incentive that Helps the Teacher Shortage in Rural and Remote Schools

In remote areas, teacher shortages are ingrained and while many programs have been proffered to help, most have fallen short, most recently the NSW Department for Education's Recruit Beyond NSW program, which is struggling to fill positions.
   Rather than a long-term commitment to working in a rural setting, it looks like the most effective programs combine a rural placement with the ability to return to the city. Read more

Goal number 13 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is to act against climate change and its impacts. It's a mammoth task, and year six students at Patterson Lakes Primary School in Victoria have learned how to lend a hand.
  Luke Milgate, a teacher at the school, collaborated with Dr Rosemary Fedele, an Air and Odour Scientist who works for the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPAV). Read more

NASA Astronaut and Western Sydney High School Students Connect at Powerhouse

In a rich STEM experience, former NASA astronaut Dr Mary Ellen Weber met with high school students from Western Sydney and regional NSW through the Powerhouse: Future Space program.
   Dr Weber was a NASA Astronaut for 10 years, flying on two Space Shuttle flights including one to the International Space Station. She helped deliver a communications satellite to orbit and was responsible for checking the systems. Read more
