Fossil Tour of Discovery for High School Students

Three high school students this year were given the opportunity to join an action-packed Flinders University field trip to the Wellington Caves in NSW to find out more about a key fossil site where the remains of long-forgotten animal species are being unearthed.
    With help from the James Moore Memorial Palaeontology Prize, the students explored the deep past of the continent. Applications for this year's prize are open. Read more

Safe Spaces Build Trust in the Classroom

Being told they were in a ‘safe space’ made students feel more comfortable, trusting, and positive toward the person delivering the message.
   Researchers from Flinders University and collaborators in the United States studied the responses of 738 U.S based university students. Each student watched a short trauma-related lecture introduced by an instructor with either a trigger warning, a safe space message, both, or neither. Read more

Program Builds Reading Skills in Multicultural School

Australian Islamic College (AIC) Perth serves a rich, diverse community. Many students come from non-English speaking backgrounds and represent a wide range of cultural and linguistic heritages.
   This diversity is a strength, but it also means literacy development is a key priority. Teachers focus on ensuring that every student - regardless of their starting point -  develops strong reading and comprehension skills. Read more

"Nothing has changed" after Disability Royal Commission

Students with disability continue to be excluded, bullied, and denied meaningful support at school almost two years after the Disability Royal Commission called for urgent reform.
    A new national report, Disillusion and Delay, draws on recent surveys of nearly 400 disabled students and parents or caregivers.
    Australia’s education system is hostile to the disabled, there is widespread bullying and exclusion. Read more

2025 My First Speech Accepting Submissions

The 2025 edition of the national My First Speech competition for year 10, 11 and 12 students is open and now accepting submissions.
    The My First Speech competition seeks to engage young Australians in democracy and speak about the issues that are important to them.
    Students are asked to write a 90-second speech on a topic they are passionate about. Read more
